The Allahabad Medical Association was born  in 1918 at the residence of Major B.D.Basu when a handful of doctors got together to form a Doctor’s Club. Prominent amongst those present on that fateful day (besides Major Basu) were Major Des Raj, Dr.Ranjit Singh, Dr.A.C.Banerji and Dr.R.N.Banerji. The Association thus formed was registered as “Allahabad Medical Associtaion” and it is notable that the Indian Medical Association (or IMA) came into being only in 1928. Thus Allahabad Medical Association, or “AMA” as it is popularly called, predates its parent body by a good 10 years and for this reason it is allowed to continue using its original registered name rather than being called “the Allahabad Branch of Indian Medical Association”, as would otherwise have been the case. Initially, the Doctor’s club, or AMA, functioned from the residence of Major Basu, situated at Bahadurganj but later shifted to Elgin Road at the residence of Prof.Chowdhry primarily in order to avoid the congestion of Bahadurgnj. It was from this office that AMA functioned till 2001 when it moved to its current location at 29 Stanley Road.
